Survey design is a critical step in being able to collect reliable and valid data. To study our example problem, a survey was designed to gather information on the variables of interest: television viewing habits and psychology grades.
When designing a survey, it’s important to:
- Create clear, concise questions
- Avoid leading or biased questions
- Ensure questions cover all necessary aspects of the topic
- Include demographic questions if they provide useful context
Surveys can be distributed online or via paper, depending on the access and preferences of the target population.
Additionally, selecting a representative sample is vital. The sample should reflect the diversity in the overall student population, including factors like age, gender, ethnicity, and academic performance levels. This ensures that the findings are generalizable and not biased by the composition of the sample.
Finally, when surveying, ensure that the data collection process adheres to ethical guidelines to protect the safety and privacy of participants.
