4.(a) Explain why the force exerted on a particle by a uniform sphere must be directed toward the centre of the sphere. (b) Would this statement be true if the mass distribution of the sphere were not spherically symmetric? Explain.

Short Answer

Expert verified

(a) The force exerted on a particle by a uniform sphere is perpendicular towards the centre of the sphere.

(b) No, the above statement doesn’t satisfy the spherically symmetric.

Step by step solution

01

Spherically Symmetric.

Spherically symmetric means the body has the shape of a sphere and the parts are arranged concentrically around or radiate from the centre of the sphere.

Every point “q” on the sphere that does not lie along the axis connecting the centre of the sphere and the particle will have a companion point “q” for which the components of the gravitational force perpendicular to the axis will cancel.

Point “q” can be found by rotating the sphere 180° about the axis.

02

Mass distribution of spheres

The force will not necessarily cancel if the mass is not uniformly distributed unless the centre mass of the non-uniform sphere still lies along the axis.

Therefore, the mass is not distributed on the spherically symmetric surface.

Two identical particles, each of mass 1000kg, are coasting in free space along the same path, one in front of the other by 20m. At the instant their separation distance has this value, each particle has precisely the same velocity of role="math" localid="1663837344267" 800i^m/s. What are their precise velocities when they are 2.0 m apart?

Use Kepler’s third law to determine how many days it takes a spacecraft to travel in an elliptical orbit from a point 6 670 km from the Earth’s center to the Moon, 385, 000 km from the Earth’s center.

A system consists of three particles, each of mass 5.00g, located at the corners of an equilateral triangle with sides of 30.0cm. (a) Calculate the potential energy of the system. (b) Assume the particles are released simultaneously. Describe the subsequent motion of each. Will any collisions take place? Explain.

Why is the following situation impossible? A spacecraft is launched into a circular orbit around the Earth and circles the Earth once every hour.

Consider an object of mass m, not necessarily small compared with the mass of the Earth, released at a distance of 1.20×107mfrom the center of the Earth. Assume the Earth and the object behave as a pair of particles, isolated from the rest of the Universe. (a) Find the magnitude of the acceleration arelwith which each starts to move relative to the other as a function of m. Evaluate the acceleration (b) for m=5.00kg(c) for m=200kg, and (d) for m=2.00×1024kg. (e) Describe the pattern of variation of arelwithm .
