A 60 g ball is tied to the end of a 50-cm-long string and swung in a vertical circle. The center of the circle, as shown in FIGURE P8.57, is 150 cm above the floor. The ball is swung at the
minimum speed necessary to make it over the top without the string going slack. If the string is released at the instant the ball is at the top of the loop, how far to the right does the ball hit the ground?

Short Answer

Expert verified

The ball will hit the ground at a distance of 1.41 meters.

Step by step solution

01

Given information

mass = 60 gm=0.06kg

length = 50 cm=0.5 m

Height of center of circle =1.5 m = 150 cm

Explanation

Lets draw a free body diagram as below and equate forces

Lets consider the top point, we have

Ttop=mv2r-mg

To find the minimum speed necessary to make it over the top we have, T=0,

0=mv2r-mgv=rg

Substitute values given, we get

v=(0.5m)(9.8m/s2)=2.21m/s

The height from which ball is falling =150 cm + 50cm=200 cm= 2m

Distance can be found by using the formula

s=ut+12at2

as u=0 and s= H , so

H=12gt2t=2Hg

Substitute the values we get

t=2(2m)(9.8m/s2)=0.639s

distance traveled in 0.639 sec with a velocity of 2.21 m/sec is

distance = (0.639 sec) x (2.21 m/sec) = 1.4121 meters.

The father of Example 8.2 stands at the summit of a conical hill as he spins his 20 kg child around on a 5.0 kg cart with a 2.0-m-long rope. The sides of the hill are inclined at 20oยญ. He
again keeps the rope parallel to the ground, and friction is negligible. What rope tension will allow the cart to spin with the same 14 rpm it had in the example?

FIGUREQ8.5shows two balls of equal mass moving in vertical circles. Is the tension in string Agreater than, less than, or equal to the tension in string Bif the balls travel over the top of the circle (a) with equal speed and (b) with equal angular velocity?

A 2.0 kg ball swings in a vertical circle on the end of an 80-cm-long string. The tension in the string is 20 N when its angle from the highest point on the circle is ฮธ = 30ยญo.
a. What is the ballโ€™s speed when ฮธ = 30oยญ?
b. What are the magnitude and direction of the ballโ€™s acceleration when ฮธ = 30oยญ?

A 1500 kg car starts from rest and drives around a flat 50-m-diameter circular track. The forward force provided by the carโ€™s drive wheels is a constant 1000 N.
a. What are the magnitude and direction of the carโ€™s acceleration at t = 10 s? Give the direction as an angle from the r-axis.
b. If the car has rubber tires and the track is concrete, at what time does the car begin to slide out of the circle?

A toy train rolls around a horizontal 1.0-m-diameter track. The coefficient of rolling friction is 0.10. How long does it take the train to stop if itโ€™s released with an angular speed of 30 rpm?
