Two very thin circular plastic sheets are close to each other and carry equal and opposite uniform charge. Explain briefly why the field between the sheets is much larger than the field outside. Illustrate your argument on a diagram.

Short Answer

Expert verified

The field is much larger between the sheets because the two individual fields add up here. The diagram is drawn below.

Step by step solution

01

Given data

A rod with uniformly distributed positive charge

02

Electric field direction

Electric field is directed away from a positive charge distribution and is directed toward a negative charge distribution

03

Determination of the field between the sheets and outside

The direction of the field from the positive sheet E+ and the negative sheet E- in between the sheets and outside are depicted in the following figure:

As can be seen from the figure, the two fields are parallel in between the sheets and anti-parallel outside. Thus in between the sheets they add up, whereas they get subtracted outside. Hence the magnitude of field is maximum in between the sheets.

You observe three carts moving to the left. Cart A moves to the left at nearly constant speed. Cart B moves to the left, gradually speeding up. Cart C moves to the left, gradually slowing down. Which cart or carts, if any, experience a net force to the left?

Question: The following questions refer to the circuit shown in Figure 18.114, consisting of two flashlight batteries and two Nichrome wires of different lengths and different thicknesses as shown (corresponding roughly to your own thick and thin Nichrome wires).

The thin wire is 50 cm long, and its diameter is 0.25 mm. The thick wire is 15 cm long, and its diameter is 0.35 mm. (a) The emf of each flashlight battery is 1.5 V. Determine the steady-state electric field inside each Nichrome wire. Remember that in the steady state you must satisfy both the current node rule and energy conservation. These two principles give you two equations for the two unknown fields. (b) The electron mobility

in room-temperature Nichrome is about 7ร—10-5(ms)(Ns). Show that it takes an electron 36 min to drift through the two Nichrome wires from location B to location A. (c) On the other hand, about how long did it take to establish the steady state when the circuit was first assembled? Give a very approximate numerical answer, not a precise one. (d) There are about 9ร—1028mobile electrons per cubic meter in Nichrome. How many electrons cross the junction between the two wires every second?

Using the law of cosines, show that Eq. 3.17can be written as follows:

Whereandare the usual spherical polar coordinates, with the z axis along the

line through. In this form, it is obvious thaton the sphere,.

  1. Find the induced surface charge on the sphere, as a function of. Integrate this to get the total induced charge. (What should it be?)

  2. Calculate the energy of this configuration.

Many heavy nuclei are โ€œalpha emittersโ€: they emit an alpha particle, which is the historical name for the nucleus of a helium atom, which contains two protons. For example, a thorium nucleus containing 90 protons is an alpha-emitter. What element does thorium turn into as a result of emitting an alpha particle?

As your spaceship coasts towards Mars, you need to move a heavy load of 1200 kg along a hallway of the spacecraft that has a 90โˆ˜right turn, without touching the walls, floor, or ceiling, by working remotely, using devices attached to the load that can be programmed to fire blasts of compressed air for up to in any1.0โ€„s desired direction. During a blast the load is subjected to a force of 20โ€„N. The center of the load must move 3 m along the first section of the hallway, starting from rest, then 4 m along the second section, ending at rest. Let the starting point be โŸจ0,0,0โŸฉโ€„m, with the first section ending at โŸจ0,3,0โŸฉโ€„mand the second section ending at โŸจ4,3,0โŸฉโ€„m. Using just three blasts of compressed air, choose the times when these blasts should be scheduled, their durations, and their directions. How long does it take to complete the entire move?
