Should an ammeter have a low or high resistance? Why? Should a voltmeter have a low or high resistance? Why?

Short Answer

Expert verified

An ammeter should have low resistance since it is connected in series. A voltmeter should have high resistance since it is connected in parallel.

Step by step solution

01

Given data

An ammeter and voltmeter are provided.

02

Current and resistance

Current through a circuit path is inversely proportional to the total resistance in that path.

03

Determination of resistances of ammeter and voltmeter

An ammeter is connected in series in a circuit. Hence it must have low resistance so as not to modify the total resistance of the circuit much. If it does, then it will modify the current which it has to measure.

A voltmeter is connected in parallel to the circuit. It provides an alternate path for the current to flow. So it must have very high resistance so that current doesn't flow through that path keeping the current and voltage in the original circuit unchanged.

How does the final (equilibrium) charge on the capacitor plates depend on the size of the capacitor plates? On the spacing between the capacitor plates? On the presence of a plastic slab between the plates?

A particular capacitor is initially charged. Then a high-resistance Nichrome wire is connected between the plates of the capacitor, as shown in Figure 19.69. The needle of a compass placed under the wire deflects 20ยฐto the east as soon as the connection is made. After 60sthe compass needle no longer deflects.

(a)Which of the diagrams in Figure 19.69 best indicates the electron current at three locations in this circuit? (1) 0.01safter the circuit is connected, (2) 15s after the circuit is connected, (3) 120s after the circuit is connected.

(b)Which of the diagrams in Figure 19.70 best indicates the net electric field inside the wire at three locations in this circuit? (1) 0.01s after the circuit is connected, (2) 15safter the circuit is connected, (3) 120s after the circuit is connected.

The capacitor in Figure 19.67 is initially uncharged, then the circuit is connected. Which graph in Figure 19.66 best describes the absolute value of the charge on the left plate as a function of time?

How is the charging time for a capacitor correlated with the initial current? That is, if the initial current is bigger, is the charging time, longer, shorter, or the same?

State whether the following statement is true or false, and briefly explain why: โ€œIn the two circuits shown in Figure 19.64, the battery output power is greater in circuit 2 because there is an additional resistor dissipating power.โ€
