A violin string 15.0 cmlong and fixed at both ends oscillates in its n=1mode. The speed of waves on the string is 250 m/s, and the speed of sound in air is 348 m/s.

What are the (a) frequency and (b) wavelength of the emitted sound wave?

Short Answer

Expert verified
  1. The frequency of the emitted wave is833.3Hz
  2. The wavelength of the emitted wave is0.418m

Step by step solution

01

Identification of given data

  1. Speed of wave on the string,v=250 m/s
  2. n=1
  3. Speed of sound in air,va=348 m/s
  4. Length of the violin string,l=15 cmor0.15 m

Significance of SHM

A periodic motion of a point down a straight line with acceleration always toward a fixed point in that line and a distance from that point proportional to that acceleration is known as a SHM. Here,n=1 is for the fundamental frequency. So, the length of the string is half the wavelength of the wave on the string. Again, using the direct formula of frequency, we obtain the frequency of the emitted wave.

Formulae:

The wavelength of fundamental frequency (n=1), λ=2l …(i)

The frequency of an oscillation,f=vλ …(ii)

The wavelength of an oscillation in air, λ=vaf …(iii)

03

(a) Determining the frequency of the emitted wave

Wavelength on string for the fundamental frequency can be given using the equation (i) as:

λ=0.15 m(2)=0.3m

Frequency of an oscillation using equation (ii) can be written as:

f=250 ms0.3 m=833.3Hz

Frequency of vibration of the string will be the same for the frequency of sound.

Hence, the frequency of the emitted wave is 833.3Hz

04

(b) Determining the wavelength of the emitted wave

Wavelength of the emitted wave in air medium using equation (iii) can be written as:

λ=348 ms833.3 Hz=0.418m

Hence, the value of the wavelength of the emitted wave is 0.418m

In Fig. 17-26, three long tubes(A, B, and C) are filled with different gases under different pressures. The ratio of the bulk modulus to the density is indicated for each gas in terms of a basic value B0/r0. Each tube has a piston at its left end that can send a sound pulse through the tube (as in Fig. 16-2).The three pulses are sent simultaneously. Rank the tubes according to the time of arrival of the pulses at the open right ends of the tubes, earliest first.

Question: A handclap on stage in an amphitheater sends out sound waves that scatters from terraces of width W 0.75 mfigure. The sound returns to the stage as a periodic series of pulses, one from each terrace; the parade of pulses sounds like a played note (a)Assuming that all the rays in figure are horizontal , find the frequency at which the pulses return(that is ,the frequency of the perceived note .(b)If the widthof the terraces were smaller would the frequency be higher or lower?

For a particular tube, here are four of the six harmonic frequencies below 1000Hz : 300, 600 , 750 , and 900Hz. What two frequencies are missing from the list?

A violin string 30.0cmlong with linear density 0.650g/mis placed near a loudspeaker that is fed by an audio oscillator of variable frequency. It is found that the string is set into oscillation only at the frequencies 880Hzand 1320Hzas the frequency of the oscillator is varied over the range 500-1500Hz. What is the tension in the string?

Approximately a third of people with normal hearing have ears that continuously emit a low-intensity sound outward through the ear canal. A person with such spontaneous to acoustic emission is rarely aware of the sound, except perhaps in a noise free environment, but occasionally the emission is loud enough to be heard by someone else nearby. In one observation, the sound wave had a frequency of 1665Hzand a pressure amplitude of1665Hz. What were (a) the displacement amplitude and (b) the intensity of the wave emitted by the ear?
