A snowball is thrown from ground level (by someone in a hole) with initial speedv0 at an angle of45° relative to the (level) ground, on which the snowball later lands. If the launch angle is increased, do (a) the range and (b) the flight time increase, decrease, or stay the same?

Short Answer

Expert verified
  1. Range of snow ball decreases as the angle increases.
  2. Time of flight of snow ball increases as the angle increases.

Step by step solution

01

Given information

Here angle isθ=45°and initial isv0 .

02

To understand the concept

This problem is based on the concept of projectile motion. When a particle is thrown near the earth’s surface, it travels along a curved path under constant acceleration directed towards the center of the earth surface. Using concept of projectile, the range of projectile can be found. For range, vertical and horizontal components of initial velocity as well as vertical and horizontal distances can be used. Also using the kinematic equations the time of flight of projectile can be found.

Formulae:

R=v02×sin2θg

t=2v0sinθg

03

(a) To find the range of snow ball

Atθ=45° every projectile has maximum range

We can find the range R of the projectile by plugging the values of initial velocity and angle.

As the angle increased the range will decrease because ofsin2θ . As angle increases, the value of sin2θ will decrease.

04

(b) To find the time of flight of snow ball

If the angle is increased the value of t increases as the higher angles value of sin tends to 1.

A baseball is hit at Fenway Park in Boston at a point 0.762 mabove home plate with an initial velocity of 33.53 m/sdirected 55.0°above the horizontal. The ball is observed to clear the 11.28-m-high wall in left field (known as the “green monster”)5.00 s after it is hit, at a point just inside the left-field foulline pole. Find (a) the horizontal distance down the left-field foul line from home plate to the wall; (b) the vertical distance by which the ball clears the wall; (c) the horizontal and vertical displacements of the ball with respect to home plate 0.500 sbefore it clears the wall.
