Figure 2-20 gives the velocity of a particle moving along an axis. Point 1 is at the highest point on the curve; point 4 is at the lowest point; and points 2 and 6 are at the same height. What is the direction of travel at (a) time t=0and (b) point 4? (c) At which of the six numbered points does the particle reverse its direction of travel? (d) Rank the six points according to the magnitude of the acceleration, greatest first.

Short Answer

Expert verified

(a) The direction of travel is in the positive direction

(b) The direction of travel is in the negative direction

(c) The particle reverses its direction of travel at points 3 and 5

(d) Ranking is 6>5>4=1>3>2

Step by step solution

01

Given information

The graph in figure 2.20

02

To understand the concept

The velocity is the rate of change of displacement. The positive value of the velocity implies that the change in the displacement is positive. It means the particle is traveling in a positive direction. Similarly, the negative value of velocity implies that the particle is traveling in the negative direction.

03

(a) To find the direction of travel at t=0

The velocity of the particle is given by,

v=dxdt

Here dxis the change in the displacement.

From the graph, it can be seen that the value of the velocity at t = 0 is positive. Thus, the direction of travel at the time t = 0 is in the positive direction of the axis.

04

(b) To find the direction of travel at t=4

From the graph, it can be seen that the velocity at point 4 is negative. Thus, the direction of travel at point 4 is in the negative direction of the axis

05

(c) To find the points at which the particle reverses the direction

From the graph it is seen that the velocity changes from positive to negative at point 3 and negative to positive at point 5. Thus, the particle reverses its direction of travel at points 3 and 5

06

(d) To find the ranking

Here the magnitude of acceleration is given by the slope of the graph. From the graph, the slope of the graph at points 1 and 4 is zero.

The slope of the graph is negative at points 2 and 3 with the slope being more negative at 2 than 3.

The slope of the graph is positive at points 5 and 6 with the slope being more positive at 6 than 5.

Therefore, the ranking is6>5>4=1>3>2

A key falls from a bridge that is 45 m above the water. It falls directly into a model boat, moving with constant velocity that is 12mfrom the point of impact when the key is released. What is the speed of the boat?

Question:Compute your average velocity in following two cases: (a) You walk 73.2 mat a speed of 1.22 m/sand then run 73.2at a speed of 3.05m/salong a straight track. (b) You walk for1 minat a speed of 1.22m/sand then run for1 min at3.05m/salong a straight track. (c) Graph x versus t for both cases and indicate how the average velocity is found on the graph.

A ball is thrown down vertically with an initial speed of from a height of . (a) What is its speed just before it strikes the ground? (b) How long does the ball take to reach the ground? What would be the answers to (c) part a and (d) part b if the ball were thrown upward from the same height and with the same initial speed? Before solving any equations, decide whether the answers to (c) and (d) should be greater than, less than, or the same as in (a) and (b).
