A cylindrical metal rod is 1.60 mlong and 5.50 min diameter. The resistance between its two ends (at 20°) is 1.09×10-3Ω. (a) What is the material? (b) A round disk,2.00 cm in diameter and 1.00 mmthick, is formed of the same material. What is the resistance between the round faces, assuming that each face is an equi-potential surface?

Short Answer

Expert verified

a) The material is silver.

b) The resistance between the round faces of the disk is5.16×10-8Ω .

Step by step solution

01

Identification of the given data

The given data can be listed below as:

  • Length of the rod is, L = 1.60 m .
  • Diameter of the rod is,d=5.50mm=5.5×10-3m .
  • Resistance of the rod is,R=1.09×10-3Ω .
  • Diameter of the round disk is,d=2.00cm=0.02m .
  • Thickness of the disk is,t=1.0mm=1.00×10-3m .
  • Material and hence the resistivity of the disk is same as that of rod.
02

Understanding the concept of the resistance

Here, we need to use the equation relating to resistance and resistivity. By using that equation, we can find the type of material and then the resistance between the faces of the disk.

Formulae:

The cross-sectional area of the circle is,

A=πd24 … (i)

The resistance of a material is,

R=ρLA … (ii)

The resistivity of a material is,

ρ=RAL … (iii)

03

a) Calculation to identify the material

Area of cross section of the rod can be calculated using the given data in equation (i) as follows:

A=3.14×5.5×10-3m42=23.74×10-6m2

Using value of area and all given values in equation (iii), we can get the resistivity of the material as follows:

role="math" localid="1661418391967" ρ=23.74×10-6m2×1.09×10-3Ω1.60m=1.62×10-8Ω.m

This is the resistivity of the silver.

Therefore, the material of the rod is silver.

04

b) Calculation of the resistance between the rod ends

As we know, that rod and disk are of same material. Thus, the resistivity of the disk is given by,ρ=1.62×10-8Ω.m .

Distance between two faces is the thickness of the disk.

Thus, the value of the length is given by,L=1×10-3m .

Now, the area of the round disk can be calculated using the diameter value in equation (i) as follows:

A=3.14×0.02m24=3.14×10-4m2

Using value of area and all the given values in formula of equation (ii), we can get the value of the resistance between the two ends of the rod as follows:

R=1.62×10-8Ω.m×1×10-3m3.14×10-4m2=5.16×10-8Ω

Hence, the value of the resistance is5.16×10-8Ω .

A wire 4.00mlong and 6.00mmin diameter has a resistance of15.0. A potential difference of 23.0 Vis applied between the ends. (a) What is the current in the wire? (b) What is the magnitude of the current density? (c) Calculate the resistivity of the wire material. (d) Using Table, identify the material.

Figure 26-15 shows cross sections through three long conductors of the same length and material, with square cross sections of edge lengths as shown. Conductor Bfits snugly within conductor A, and conductor Cfits snugly within conductor B. Rank the following according to their end-to-end resistances, greatest first: the individual conductors and the combinations of A+B(Binside A),B+C(Cinside B), and A+B+C(Binside Ainside C).

A potential difference V is applied to a wire of cross-sectional areaA , length L, and resistivity p. You want to change the applied potential difference and stretch the wire so that the energy dissipation rate is multiplied by 30.0and the current is multiplied by 4.00 . Assuming the wire’s density does not change, what are (a) the ratio of the new length toLand (b) the ratio of the new cross-sectional area to A?

If the gauge number of a wire is increased by 6, the diameter is halved; if a gauge number is increased by 1, the diameter decreases by the factor 21/6 (see the table). Knowing this, and knowing thatof 10-gauge copper wire has a resistance of approximately, 1.00Ω, estimate the resistance of 25 ftof 22-gauge copper wire.

A 30 μFcapacitor is connected across a programmed power supply. During the interval from t = 0 to t = 0.300s the output voltage of the supply is given byV(t)=6.00+4.00t-2.00t2voltsvolts. Att=0.500s find (a) the charge on the capacitor, (b) the current into the capacitor, and (c) the power output from the power supply.
