Cuckoo Care. Many species of cuckoos are brood parasites. The females lay their eggs in the nests of smaller bird species, who then raise the young cuckoos at the expense of their own young. Data on the lengths, in millimeters (mm), of cuckoo eggs found in the nests of three bird species - the Tree Pipit. Hedge Sparrow, and Pied Wagtail - were collected by the late O.M. Latter in 1902and used by L.H.C. Tippett in his text The Methods of States (New York Wiley, 1952. p. 176). Use the following boxplots to compare the lengths of cuckoo eggs found in nests of the three bird species, paying special attention to center and variation.

Short Answer

Expert verified

The variation in cuckoo eggs of the pipit is less than that of sparrow and wagtail.

Step by step solution

01

Given information

We need to find out the comparison in the lengths of cuckoo eggs found.

02

Explanation

The whiskers of the boxplot are of low and high value. The box starts at the lower quartile, finishes at the upper quartile, and has a straight line at the median.

The median length of cuckoo eggs in all three boxplots is practically identical, indicating that these three species have the same length of cuckoo eggs.

The difference between sparrow and wagtail cuckoo eggs goes beyond simply recognizing Pipit cuckoo eggs because their boxplots are wider.

Copperhead and Tiger Snakes. S. Fearn et al. compare two types of snakes in the article โ€œBody Size and Trophic Divergence of Two Large Sympatric Elapic Snakes in Tasmaniaโ€ (Australian Journal of Zoology, Vol. 60, No. 3, pp. 159-165). Tiger snakes and lowland copperheads are both large snakes confined to the cooler parts of Tasmania. The weights of the male lowland copperhead in Tasmania have a mean of 812.07 g and a standard deviation of 330.24 g; the weights of the male tiger snake in Tasmania have a mean of 743.65 g and a standard deviation of 336.36 g.
a. Determine the z-scores for both a male lowland copperhead snake and a male tiger snake whose weights are 850 g.
b. Under what conditions would it be reasonable to use z-scores to compare the relative standings of the weights of the two snakes?
c. Assuming that a comparison using z-scores is legitimate, relative to the other snakes of its type, which snake is heavier?

Among many of the statistics provided are the numbers of men and women enrolled in 2yearand 4yeardegree-granting institutions. During one year, the percentage of full-time enrolled students that were women, for each of the 50states and the District of Columbia, is as presented on the WeissStats site.
