Quarters: Run Chart Treat the 100 consecutive measurements from the 20 days as individual values and construct a run chart. What does the result suggest?

Short Answer

Expert verified

The Run-chart is shown below:

The process appears out of control as the variation is large.

Step by step solution

01

Given information

Weights of quarters are recorded for 20 days, five times a day.

02

Describe a run-chart

A run chart maps the observations of the process onto a graph where horizontal axis represents time duration and vertical axis represents the observation measure.

03

Sketch the run chart

Sketch the chart in following steps:

  1. Draw a horizontal axis with time unit as days and vertical axis as weights for quarters.
  2. Each hour for 20 days records observation for weight. Plot the paired data in sequentialmanner on the curve using dots.
  3. Connect each consecutivepair of dots with a line segment.
  4. The resultant graph is a run chart.

The graph is shown below.

04

Analyze the run chart

By observing the graph, it can be observed that:

  • The variation increases after 85th period to a large extend.
  • Few points lie significantly higher than the other points.

Thus, the process is not stable.

Control Charts for p. In Exercises 5–12, use the given process data to construct a control chart for p. In each case, use the three out-of-control criteria listed near the beginning of this section and determine whether the process is within statistical control. If it is not, identify which of the three out-of-control criteria apply

Aspirin Tablets Bottles of aspirin tablets typically have labels indicating that each tablet contains 325 mg of aspirin, but the actual amounts can vary between 315 mg and 335 mg. A tablet is defective if it has less than 315 mg of aspirin or more than 335 mg of aspirin. Listed below are numbers of defects found in batches of 1000 tablets.

Listed below are annual sunspot numbers paired with annual high values of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). Sunspot numbers are measures of dark spots on the sun, and the DJIA is an index that measures the value of select stocks. The data are from recent and consecutive years. Use a 0.05 significance level to test for a linear correlation between values of the DJIA and sunspot numbers. Is the result surprising?
