Chapter 2: Q16E (page 77)
Shown are graphs of the position functions of two runners, A and B, who run a \(100\)meter race and finish in a tie.
(a) Describe and compare how the runners run the race.
(b) At what time is the distance between the runners the greatest?
(c) At what time do they have the same velocity?
Short Answer
a. Runner A runs the entire race at constant velocity. Runner B starts the race slowly with respect to runner A but he finishes the race with a faster velocity than A.
b. The distance between the runners the greatest at the time between \(9\) and \(10\) seconds.
c. At almost \(9.5\) seconds they have the same velocity.
