Kelp forests are underwater ecosystems anchored by large, brown algae known as kelp. These forests are among the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth.
Kelp forests provide:
- A habitat for a multitude of marine species such as fish, invertebrates, and seabirds.
- Food resources for herbivorous species like sea urchins and some fish.
- Protection from predators for small marine creatures.
In our example, if sea urchins are left unchecked, they can devastate kelp forests by consuming substantial amounts of kelp. However, when predators like sea otters are present, sea urchin populations are controlled, allowing kelp forests to thrive and continue supporting diverse marine life.
