Question: Compare the hybridization of Si atoms in Si(s) with that of C atoms in graphite (see Fig. 21.26). If silicon were to adopt the graphite structure, would its electrical conductivity be high or low?

Short Answer

Expert verified

The electrical conductivity of Si atom will be high.

Step by step solution

01

Step 1:

In outer most Shell both the atoms Si and C have 4 valence electrons. Silicon form 4 single bond which are σ-bonds so the hybridization of Si is sp3 and C form 3 σ-bonds and the electron is free so the hybridization of C is sp2, due to its hybridization it is a Hexagonal Planer Structure.

02

Step 2:

From the 4 σ-bondsof Si, 1 bond will break when the Si atom were to adopt the graphite structure. Due to the presence of 1 free electrons with each of the Si atom, it’s conductivity increases so the electrical conductivity of Si atom will be high.

A gold wire 4.0 mm in diameter and 1.5 m in length is to be used in a test circuit.

(a) Calculate the resistance of the wire.

(b) Calculate the current density in the wire when the voltage applied between its ends is 0.070 V.

(c) Calculate the electric field in the wire.

Question: The mixed oxide ceramic has zero electrical resistance at 125 K. Calculate the average oxidation number of the copper in this compound if x = 0.50 and thallium is in the +3 oxidation state.

Question: The most common feldspars are those that contain potassium, sodium, and calcium cations. They are called, respectively, orthoclasenKAlSi3O8, albiteNaAlSi3O8, and anorthiteCaAl2Si2O8. The solid solubility of orthoclase in albite is limited, and its solubility in anorthite is almost negligible. Albite and anorthite, however, are completely miscible at high temperatures and show complete solid solution. Offer an explanation for these observations, based on the tabulated radii of the K+, Na+, and Ca2+ions from Appendix F.

Mercury(II) sulfide (HgS) exists in two different crystalline forms. In cinnabar, the band gap is 3.2×10-19J; in metacinnabar, it is 2.6×10-19J. In some old paintings with improperly formulated paints, the pigment vermilion (cinnabar) has transformed to metacinnabar on exposure to light. Describe the color change that results.

Question: Beryllia (BeO) ceramics have some use but show only poor resistance to strong acids and bases. Write likely chemical equations for the reaction of BeO with a strong acid and with a strong base.
