At C2, deuterium gets added and when D2Oacts on it, the hydrogen on C2gets removed and that bond shifts forming a πbond between C2and C3. Then, the πbond between C3andC4 moves to form a πbond betweenC4 and C3. Moreover, the CNπbond again shifts to the nitrogen atom regaining the lone pair of electrons on nitrogen atom. Thus, deuterium is placed on the second position and therefore, 2-deuteriopyrrole is formed.
