Chapter 10: Problem 21
An alternative method for the synthesis of bromoalkanes from primary and secondary alcohols is through the use of phosphorous tribromide, \(\mathrm{PBr}_{3}\) - This method of preparation of bromoalkanes takes place under milder conditions than treatment with HBr. Although rearrangement sometimes occurs with \(\mathrm{PBr}_{3}\), the extent is considerably less than that with HBr, expecially when the reaction mixture is kept at or helow \(0^{-} \mathrm{C}\).
