Chapter 16: PROBLEM 16.11 (page 613)

Question: Neuroprotectin D1 (NPD1) is synthesized in the body from highly unsaturated essential fatty acids. NPD1 is a potent natural anti-inflammatory agent.

a. Label each double bond as conjugated or isolated.

b. Label each double bond as E or Z.

c. For each conjugated system, label the given conformation as s-cis or s-trans.

Answer

NPD1

Step by step solution

01

Conjugated and isolated double bond

Conjugation is a process of delocalization that takes place in a system where single and multiple bonds are alternate positions. Multiple bonds or single bonds are not the alternate positions that are called isolates double bonds.

The delocalization may be defined as bonding in which more than two nuclei share the electrons.

02

Identification E/Z

In the E/Z system, the group of highest priority on each carbon atom is identified by using the sequence.

If the highest priority groups are on the same side of the double bond, the configuration is a Z, and if they are on opposite sides, the configuration is E.

03

Determination of the cis and trans isomers

The isomer in which the identical groups are on the same side of the double bond is called cis form, and the isomer in which the identical groups are on the opposite side of the double bond is called trans form.

Hence the answer is as shown:
