Basicity, or alkalinity, is the opposite of acidity. It refers to the presence of hydroxide ions (\[OH^-\]) in a solution. As the concentration of these ions increases, the basicity of a solution increases as well, which results in a higher pH value (above 7).Some everyday basic substances we encounter include:
- Baking soda
- Soapy water
- Bleach
These substances are known for their slippery feel and ability to neutralize acids. When pool water becomes more basic, as observed during warm periods, it indicates a decrease in acidity and a subsequent rise in pH.A key reason for maintaining the right level of basicity is to ensure comfort for swimmers, as well as preventing damage to pool equipment.
