Melanin is the primary pigment responsible for coloring not just our skin, but also our hair and eyes. The production of melanin occurs within cells called melanocytes. When MSH stimulates these cells, melanin is synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine through a series of chemical reactions.
There are different types of melanin, each contributing to various shades and tones of pigmentation. For example:
- Eumelanin: Responsible for brown and black pigments.
- Pheomelanin: Provides red and yellow hues.
The interaction and ratio between these types determine an individual's unique coloring, making people appear distinct from one another.
