Sesamoid bones are unique bones in the human body. They are embedded within tendons and are not attached directly to other bones. The patella is the largest and most well-known sesamoid bone.
These bones occur in areas where a tendon passes over a joint, such as in the knee. Sesamoid bones serve several important functions:
- They reduce friction, which helps prevent excessive wear and tear on tendons.
- They can provide a mechanical advantage by changing the angle at which a tendon acts.
Without sesamoid bones, tasks that involve high-stress movements could become difficult and painful.
