Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years, occurring naturally around age 51. Postmenopause includes the years following this transition. During postmenopause, several physiological changes are expected because of reduced estrogen levels.
Some of the common changes include:
- Amenorrhea or the absence of menstrual periods.
- Sparse or thinning pubic hair.
- Dryness of the vaginal mucous membrane.
Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining various bodily functions. Its decline leads to the aforementioned changes, along with other symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.
Although these changes can be uncomfortable, they are usually not indicative of underlying disease. However, awareness of expected changes helps distinguish between normal aging and potential health issues that may need attention.
