Step-2 Explanation

In the case of woody plants, a small porous structure appears within the cork of the young branches that are the openings of the periderm. These structures are known as lenticels, within which it contains intercellular spaces.

Lenticels play a significant role in plants. When the stomata remain close, these lenticels help in gaseous exchange, and sometimes a little transpiration may take place through the lenticel, called lenticular transpiration.
