In a comparison of the stages of meiosis to the stages of mitosis, which stages are unique to meiosis, and which stages have the same events in both meiosis and mitosis?

Short Answer

Expert verified

All the processes are the same in meiosis and mitosis except for some stages like prophase II and unique features of meiosis I.

Step by step solution

01

Step 1. Introduction

In both mitosis and meiosis DNA synthesis occurs and both processes take place in the M-phase of the cell cycle. Typical stages like metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and prophase are seen in both processes.

02

Step 2. Explanation

All the stages of meiosis I are unique except telophase I because instead of sister chromatid, homologous chromosomes are separated. In some of the species, chromosomes do not decondense and do not form nuclear envelopes in telophase I. All the stages of meiosis II have almost the same events as mitosis except prophase II. In some organisms, chromosomes remain condensed and have no nuclear envelope.
